A Barcode is a string of numbers or characters identifying a product, rendered as bars or a pattern that optical readers (barcode scanners, phone cameras) can read instantly. It is a fundamental tool for stock tracking, checkout and warehouse management in e-commerce and retail.

How Do You Create an EAN-13 Barcode?

EAN-13 is the 13-digit barcode most widely used in retail. The leading digits represent the country/company prefix and the final digit is the check (checksum) digit. Enter 12 digits in the tool above and the check digit is calculated and appended automatically. Once generated, save it Download PNG and use it on your product labels.

Note: official, unique EAN numbers for selling through retail chains are obtained from organisations such as GS1. This tool generates a barcode image for your own internal use and labelling.

The Difference Between a Barcode and an SKU

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is the private code your business uses to track products internally (e.g. TSHIRT-RED-M). A Barcode, on the other hand, identifies the product universally and is read by scanners. Your SKU is yours alone; a barcode can be read by anyone. The two work together: the SKU for internal management, the barcode for physical scanning.
