What Is Desi and What Does It Mean?
Desi is the unit carriers use for converting volume into weight that a parcel occupies. For large but light shipments (pillows, toys, packaging) the shipping fee is calculated not from the actual weight but from the space the parcel takes up — that is, from desi. This way bulky parcels that fill space in the delivery vehicle are charged fairly.
In short, desi is a parcel's "volumetric weight". In shipping calculations 1 desi corresponds to 3,000 cm³ of volume and is billed like 1 kg. If a carrier calls a shipment "5 desi", that parcel is charged like a 5 kg parcel because of the space it takes up.
How Is Desi Calculated?
The desi formula is simple:
Desi = (Width × Length × Height) / 3000
Dimensions are entered in centimetres (cm). For example, for a box measuring 40 × 30 × 25 cm:
- 40 × 30 × 25 = 30,000 cm³
- 30.000 / 3000 = 10 desi
Enter the dimensions in the tool above and you get this result in a second.
How Is the Chargeable Weight Determined?
The carrier compares the Desi you calculated with the parcel's actual (scale) weight and charges for whichever is greater. For bulky but light parcels desi is used; for small but heavy ones the actual weight is. Fill in the "Actual Weight" field in our tool and it shows the chargeable weight automatically.
How Many Kg Is 1 Desi? (Desi–Kg Table)
In shipping billing, 1 desi ≈ 1 kg is the rule. Common values and example box sizes that match each desi:
| Desi | Approximate Chargeable Weight | Volume | Example Box (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 desi | 1 kg | 3,000 cm³ | 20 × 15 × 10 |
| 2 desi | 2 kg | 6,000 cm³ | 20 × 20 × 15 |
| 3 desi | 3 kg | 9,000 cm³ | 30 × 20 × 15 |
| 4 desi | 4 kg | 12,000 cm³ | 30 × 20 × 20 |
| 5 desi | 5 kg | 15,000 cm³ | 30 × 25 × 20 |
| 10 desi | 10 kg | 30,000 cm³ | 40 × 30 × 25 |
| 15 desi | 15 kg | 45,000 cm³ | 50 × 30 × 30 |
| 20 desi | 20 kg | 60,000 cm³ | 50 × 40 × 30 |
| 30 desi | 30 kg | 90,000 cm³ | 60 × 50 × 30 |
The weight in the table is the minimum billable weight of the parcel. If the parcel's actual weight is higher, the actual weight is billed. For example, a 3 desi box that weighs 7 kg is charged for 7 kg.
Carriers and Desi Calculation
Most carriers in Turkey use the same formula: (Width × Length × Height) / 3000. The main carriers using this formula:
- Aras Kargo
- Yurtiçi Kargo
- DHL eCommerce
- PTT Cargo
- Sürat Kargo
- HepsiJET and Kolay Gelsin
Note: some carriers or special agreements may use a different divisor (something other than 3000). Check your carrier's current tariff for the exact fee. To go from desi to calculating the shipping fee and to find your free-shipping threshold, use the shipping cost calculator.
